MS NOW welcomes letters from readers who want to respond to our journalism, add context, raise a thoughtful disagreement or share a perspective that may help other readers better understand an issue. Publication is not guaranteed, but the strongest letters are timely, concise, original and directly connected to a news story or column MS NOW has recently published.

What we’re looking for

A strong letter to the editor offers a clear response to an MS NOW article, column or newsletter. The best letters do not try to cover every angle of a topic. In a few hundred words, they make one sharp point, offer support for that point and leave readers with a clear takeaway.
Letters may agree or disagree with, expand on or personalize something MS NOW has published. We are especially interested in letters that bring lived experience, professional expertise, local knowledge or a constructive challenge to the conversation.

Please do not send open letters, form letters, petitions, press releases or mass campaign language. Editors are more likely to consider a letter from a real person making a focused, original point. You must live in the United States and be at least 18 years old to submit a letter.

Basic submission guidelines

Please keep your letter concise: 150 to 300 words. Shorter letters are more likely to be considered for publication.

Your letter should be:

• Original: Submit only work you wrote yourself. Do not submit a letter that has already been published elsewhere, is under consideration by another publication or was generated in whole or in part by artificial intelligence.
• Timely: Letters responding to recent MS NOW coverage are more likely to be considered. As a rule of thumb, submit within three days of publication of the piece you are responding to.
• Specific: Include the headline, author and link that prompted your response.
• Civil and fact-based: Strong disagreement is welcome; personal attacks, abusive language, conspiracy claims, unverifiable allegations or discriminatory remarks are not.
• Transparent: Disclose any personal, professional, financial or organizational connection that you have to the topic of your letter.
