Exotic tegu ‘lizard in a blizzard’ found buried alive in Rhode Island snowstorm
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Fox News) — A man in Providence, Rhode Island, discovered a tegu lizard buried under 20 inches of snow after a winter storm. The lizard, named "Frankie," was found alive and rescued by experts.
Discovery of Frankie
The New England Wildlife Center (NEWC) shared the story of the surprising discovery of the black-and-white tegu lizard, Frankie, emerging from the snow.
Rescue Operation
The man who found Frankie wrapped him in a T-shirt and contacted reptile experts from ET Reptiles, who provided immediate care for the weak and frostbitten lizard.
Treatment and Recovery
Veterinarians found Frankie to be weak and underweight, with frostbite on his tongue. After treatment, including amputation of nonviable tissue, Frankie is now resting comfortably and receiving supportive care.
Lizard’s Background
Tegu lizards are native to South America and popular in the pet trade. While legal in Rhode Island, they cannot survive New England winters outdoors.
Anyone with information about Frankie or a missing tegu is encouraged to contact the NEWC or ET Reptiles.
