ITALY (WTOL) — Olympic medals have a rich history, with origins dating back to the 1896 Athens Olympics. While gold medals were once solid gold, they are now primarily made of silver and plated in gold, with a small amount of actual gold. Silver medals are at least 92.5% pure silver, and bronze medals are made of 420 grams of copper.
