Police in New Jersey said Monday they are investigating a vehicle striking a protester outside Delaney Hall, a privately run immigration detention facility that has drawn daily protests over conditions inside.

The woman was hit by a red sports car entering the facility Sunday as she danced and waved an upside-down American flag — a symbol of distress — according to video of the encounter shared with MS NOW and a statement from the Newark Police Department.

Shortly afterward, organizers said, Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel moved into the crowd and detained at least one protester.

Several attendees reported that pepper spray or Mace was later deployed, prompting families and vigil participants to retreat from the area.
