Today’s edition of quick hits.

* In Lebanon: “Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, was bracing for an Israeli bombardment on Monday after Israel announced it would strike the city’s southern suburbs. The warning stoked fears that the shaky cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah was on the brink of collapse.”

* In related news: “The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session on Monday afternoon, requested by France, to discuss Israel’s military incursion into Lebanon and the capturing of the Beaufort, a Crusades-era castle that has been a symbol of Israel’s long occupation of southern Lebanon, according to the U.N. spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.”

* Just in time for Pride Month: “A Pentagon policy illegally banned transgender troops from military service, a divided panel of federal appeals court judges ruled on Monday in another legal setback for President Donald Trump’s sweeping agenda. The majority opinion — by a three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit — held that the Trump administration’s policy was designed to exclude people from the military based on their gender identity. The ban will remain in effect for now.”

* Serious unrest at Delaney Hall: “New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Sunday defended her decision to deploy state police to quell violent unrest outside an ICE detention facility, where House Democratic lawmakers — who were finally allowed inside — described conditions as unsanitary and unsafe.”
