Apple Intelligence is finally coming to China.

Tim Cook confirmed to China’s state-backed outlet The Paper — reported via Reuters — that Apple Intelligence has received regulatory approval in China. A test version arrives in late October.

What’s in the China launch

The initial China feature set includes live translation, writing tools, and photo cleanup/Genmoji — but NOT the upgraded Siri AI (rebuilt on Gemini architecture). That one will have to wait.

How Apple got here

  • Apple trained a China-specific LLM in partnership with Alibaba (Qwen/Tongyi models).
  • Approvals cleared a CAC filing in July and an MIIT license renewal on September 29.
  • Covered devices include iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and the iPhone 17 series.

Cook also met China’s commerce minister Wang Wentao on Thursday to discuss AI development, according to TechRepublic.

Bottom line: Apple Intelligence China approval is a big deal — it opens Apple’s AI suite to one of its most important markets. The late-October beta is just the start.
