Don’t stop believin’, Gleeks — Glee is officially coming back. Disney+ and Hulu have greenlit a reboot of the hit musical comedy-drama from original creator Ryan Murphy, and the first original star is locked in: Lea Michele will return as Rachel Berry.
Playbill reports that Variety confirmed Michele’s involvement through multiple sources, though representatives for both Michele and Murphy declined to comment. More original cast may follow: Heather Morris (Brittany Pierce) and Chord Overstreet (Sam Evans) both dropped hints on social media.
Here’s the Toledo-area angle: the original Glee was set at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio — about an hour down I-75 from Toledo. The New Directions’ show-choir journey was, in a very real sense, an NW Ohio story (Wikipedia).
Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan wrote the new pilot together. Murphy told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year that he’d “just finished” the script, and that around 10 original cast members were enthusiastic about the idea. The reboot will be produced by 20th Television and stream on both Hulu and Disney+.
The original series ran from 2009 to 2015, earned 19 Emmy nominations (winning two), four Golden Globes, and moved over 36 million digital singles worldwide. A sequel has been rumored for years — this is the first time it’s official.
