SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP — Springfield Local Schools will have to cut an estimated $500,000 even if voters approve an income tax levy on Tuesday — and that figure could rise to $2.5 million if the levy fails, Superintendent Matt Geha told the board of education this week.

“We have made cuts already in the last two years,” Geha said, laying out a budget picture in which the district cannot avoid reductions no matter how Tuesday’s vote goes.

The stakes land days before Election Day on Nov. 3, when Lucas County voters will decide a crowded ballot of tax issues — including Toledo’s Issue 16 income tax proposal, which city officials warn could cost 73 jobs and cancel 2027 police and fire recruitment classes if it fails.

For Springfield families, the message from the board is blunt: Tuesday’s vote decides the size of the cuts, not whether they happen. This is a developing story.
