Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated actress known for Breaking Away, Barney Miller and a long Broadway career, has died at 95. She died Wednesday, Oct. 28, at her home in New York City, her daughter Jane Harnick confirmed to the New York Times.

Her passing was medically assisted after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, according to her daughter. The diagnosis came 12 years after she was previously diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a degenerative lung disease that makes it hard to breathe.

Her film breakthrough came in 1964 as Julie in One Potato, Two Potato, for which she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. She received an Oscar nomination for her work in the 1979 movie Breaking Away. She originated the role of Sarah in the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, which earned her a Tony nomination. On television she played the wife of the namesake captain in the 1970s detective sitcom Barney Miller. In recent years she appeared on Broadway in 2017 in the play Significant Other; her final TV appearances were guest spots on Nurse Jackie in 2010 and Enlightened in 2011.

She is survived by her two children, whom she shared with late husband Jay Harnick, and her three grandchildren.
