Kevin Braun will be sworn in as Toledo’s police chief today at 11 a.m. in the mayor’s office, taking command of a department — and a city — watching its crime numbers with unusual intensity.

Braun inherits a city where homicides stand at 22 through the first nine months of the year — down about 27% from 30 at this point last year, putting Toledo on track for its lowest homicide total in a decade. But the number of people shot is up 18.6%, rising from 113 to 134.

The swearing-in follows the department’s third-quarter crime-stats reporting covered earlier this week. Read our breakdown of the Q3 numbers here.
