Toledo Votes Today on a $242-a-Year School Tax Hike
It’s Election Day in Lucas County, and the biggest questions on Toledo’s ballot hit your wallet directly. Polls are open until 7:30 p.m. today — and among the top local decisions are Issue 9, a new school levy for Toledo Public Schools, and Issue 16, a new city income tax for public safety. Here’s what’s actually at stake.

Issue 9: the school levy. Toledo voters are being asked to approve a new 6.9-mill property tax levy for Toledo Public Schools. That works out to $242 per $100,000 of home value — roughly $363 a year on a $150,000 home — and would raise about $22.8 million annually for five years to fund the district’s operations. The Toledo City Paper’s issue guide breaks down where that money would go, and the Toledo Free Press voters guide covers the full slate of candidates and issues across the region.
Issue 16: the safety tax. A new quarter-percent city income tax dedicated to police, fire, and neighborhood safety. Supporters say it would lock in funding for first responders; the levy would become part of the city’s income-tax rate if voters say yes.
Beyond Toledo. School districts across the region have tax issues of their own today: Maumee, Springfield, Sylvania, and Evergreen all have school tax questions on the ballot. Evergreen’s levy request is back after voters rejected a renewal attempt in August — making it a district to watch tonight.
The library levy (Issue 8) is also on today’s ballot — read our earlier breakdown of the library and Imagination Station levies. And for the statewide races, including the governor’s race, see our Election Day overview and this morning’s briefing.
