American Idol Is Turning 25 — ABC Announces a 2-Hour Anniversary Special
Your group chat is about to lose it. American Idol is turning 25 — and ABC is throwing the kind of birthday party only a show that basically invented modern reality TV could pull off.
ABC announced on Nov. 6, as part of its 2027 midseason schedule, that it will mark the singing competition’s 25th season with a two-hour primetime anniversary special, tentatively titled “American Idol at 25,” airing Monday, Feb. 1, 2027 at 8 p.m. ET. The special will tell “the definitive story of one of the most successful and influential shows in TV history.”
Yes, that means the auditions, the golden tickets, the jaw-dropping performances, the judges’ table drama, and all the moments you argued about at school the next morning — revisited in one big, nostalgia-soaked night.
When does Season 25 premiere?
Don’t go anywhere after the special. Season 25 of American Idol premieres the following week, Monday, Feb. 8, 2027 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, streaming the next day on Hulu.
Host Ryan Seacrest returns, alongside judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan. Underwood, of course, knows this stage from both sides — she won Season 4 before becoming one of the biggest stars the show has ever launched.
A new home base for Season 25
Season 25 also comes with a change of scenery: production is moving from Los Angeles to the Atlanta area. It’s a fresh chapter for a show that has spent a quarter-century turning unknown singers into household names.
Twenty-five years of launching superstars
American Idol debuted in 2001, and its alumni list reads like a pop-culture hall of fame. The show launched Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Adam Lambert — artists who went on to Grammys, Oscars, Broadway stages, and Las Vegas residencies.
For millennials, Idol wasn’t just a TV show. It was a weekly ritual: landline voting, Paula Abdul’s critiques, Simon Cowell’s brutal honesty, and that electric feeling when a nobody from a small town suddenly sounded like a superstar. The American Idol 25th anniversary is a reminder of just how much of today’s music landscape started with a televised audition.
What to expect from “American Idol at 25”
Details of the special are still rolling out, but a two-hour primetime celebration of the show’s history promises plenty of throwbacks — iconic performances, behind-the-scenes stories, and almost certainly a few surprise appearances from the stars the show made famous.
Whether you’ve watched since Kelly Clarkson’s first season or you discovered the show through clips on social media, Feb. 1 is the night to clear your calendar, grab your snacks, and relive 25 years of the show that taught America how to vote for its favorite singer.
