He Stole an 83-Year-Old’s Car at the Library — Now He’s Going to Prison
A Toledo man who stole an 83-year-old’s keys and car at a library — then led police on a chase that ended in a crash — has been sentenced to nine months in prison.
Keyvoin Butler, 18, of Toledo, pleaded guilty on Nov. 4 to grand theft of a motor vehicle and failure to comply. He was sentenced to nine months in prison.
The incident happened just before noon on July 20, 2026, at the Kent Branch Library. Toledo police said Butler took the car keys from the 83-year-old victim’s pocket, ran to the vehicle and took off.
About 20 minutes later, officers located the stolen vehicle on the Cherry Street Bridge near Riverside. Police said officers tried to stop Butler, but he eluded them and crashed into another occupied vehicle at Main and Riverside.
No one was injured in the crash.
Butler was arrested on July 20 and later indicted on July 28 on charges of escape, grand theft of a motor vehicle and failure to comply. The Toledo Lucas County Public Library provided security footage to investigators.
