Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke Saturday afternoon, his office announced Sunday.

The 53-year-old began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game Saturday. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke, and was then transferred to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for further monitoring.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement Sunday. His office said he is responding well to treatment.

Murphy’s Senate colleagues shared well wishes Sunday. Sen. John Fetterman — who survived a near-fatal stroke during his own 2022 campaign — wrote that he understood “all too well how much this impacts your life” and was rooting for Murphy and his family.

Murphy is not on the ballot in this year’s midterm elections. The type of stroke he suffered and how long he is expected to remain hospitalized were not disclosed. This is a developing story.
