A Global EV Summit Takes Over Downtown Toledo This Week
The world is coming to Toledo this week. The Electric Vehicle Innovation Summit (EVIS) — which has held five editions in Abu Dhabi — makes its North American debut right here, with three days of programming kicking off Tuesday, Nov. 3 and the main conference and Innovation Expo at the Glass City Center on Nov. 4–5.
Instead of separate tracks, EVIS America runs one main stage built around three themes: EVIS America (EVs, batteries and charging), FutureFuelCON (hydrogen and alternative fuels) and Mobility TechEX (AI, autonomous systems and connected vehicles). Sessions will cover U.S. charging policy, vehicle-to-grid tech, AI-powered commercial fleets and how electric, hydrogen and other fuels will coexist.
Who’s coming
The speaker list reads like a who’s-who of future mobility: RoboSense (the Chinese LiDAR maker), Nissan’s Advanced Technical Center, Uber AI Solutions, the American Center for Mobility, Lincoln Electric — the Ohio welding-automation leader exhibiting its Velion DC fast chargers — plus voices from BloombergNEF, JobsOhio, DriveOhio, DHL and Plug In America.
Why Toledo
Organizers say they target accessible, affordable second-tier cities — and local partners say Toledo was their first choice in the U.S. Northwest Ohio is home to Stellantis’ Toledo Assembly Complex (Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator) and a GM propulsion plant, and sits about an hour from Detroit. The Regional Growth Partnership of Northwest Ohio is the official strategic partner.
“Hosting EVIS America reflects what Toledo has always been about: hard work, innovation, and building the future together,” Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said when the summit was announced.
The first U.S. edition is compact — organizers told The Blade they expect 250 to 300 attendees — but it’s a real signal: the global mobility industry is treating Toledo as a player.
UToledo’s role
The University of Toledo is all in. Its College of Engineering joins the industry tours on Tuesday, Nov. 3, showcasing the new Electric Vehicle Club, robotics and autonomous-systems research, and Rocket Motorsports — the student team that builds a Formula One-style racecar from scratch each year. UToledo students, faculty and staff can get a $200 full conference rate with code UTOL100.
