Ohio Leads the Nation in Housing Affordability Collapse — Toledo Ranks No. 13
Ohio had the nation’s largest drop in home-buying affordability between 2020 and 2025, according to the National Housing Conference’s new Paycheck to Paycheck report.
Five Ohio metros landed among the 25 worst affordability declines in the country: Mansfield (No. 2), Cleveland (No. 8), Springfield (No. 10), Toledo (No. 13), and Akron (No. 23).
Researchers compared housing costs across nearly 390 metro areas against median salaries for roughly 300 occupations, using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Zillow, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
For millennials and Gen-Z Toledoans, the report puts hard numbers to a familiar squeeze: home prices have sprinted ahead while paychecks have barely budged. What used to be one of the country’s most attainable paths to homeownership is narrowing fast — and the Glass City is feeling it more than almost anywhere else in the Midwest.
