He Allegedly Shot a Man Inside a Detroit-Area Spirit Halloween — Then Shoppers Beat Him Bloody
MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. — A 21-year-old Detroit man was shot multiple times after a brief altercation inside a Spirit Halloween store Friday afternoon and later died at a hospital.
The shooting happened about 2:04 p.m. at the store in the Madison Place Shopping Complex, in the 32000 block of John R Road south of 14 Mile Road in this Detroit suburb, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The suspect, a 21-year-old Oak Park man who police say knew the victim, was beaten by bystanders while being taken into custody, according to the Fostoria Free Press. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and remains in police custody. A 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
The suspect’s wife told WDIV he holds a concealed pistol license and fired in self-defense after the other man confronted the family. Police have not confirmed that claim and plan to seek charges. Neither the victim nor the suspect has been publicly identified; detectives will submit the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police say the shooting was not random and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities have announced no connection between the Madison Heights shooting and the Spirit Halloween shooting in Fairfield, California, the same night, the New York Post reports.
