Sandusky and Margaretta Voters Just Rejected School Tax Hikes — Here’s What Schools Lose
Voters in Sandusky and Margaretta rejected school tax measures on Tuesday, deepening a school funding crunch in northwest Ohio.
Sandusky City Schools’ 4.9-mill levy failed 55% to 45%, with 4,236 voting against and 3,414 voting for, according to unofficial Erie County results.
Margaretta Local Schools’ 2.15-mill bond issue failed 54% to 47%, with 1,474 voting against and 1,289 voting for.
District officials in Sandusky project deficit spending without significant cuts to programming and personnel if new revenue is not found. The Sandusky school board meets Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at the board offices, 407 Decatur St. — with cuts likely on the table.
The results fit a statewide tax-revolt current: the local reporting notes growing support among Ohioans for an initiative to repeal property taxes altogether. It also comes one day after emails revealed Sandusky County knew about its own $4.3 million money crisis back in March.
