TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo City Council voted Wednesday against terminating the city’s contract with Flock Safety, the automated license-plate-reader camera company, rejecting the latest push to scrap the cameras and keeping them in place for now.

The ordinance to terminate the agreement failed after a heated debate, with six council members voting no. It followed a resolution introduced last month by five council members that urged the mayor to end the city’s agreement with Flock, remove or deactivate all of its equipment, purge all stored data, and block any future contract renewals.

Council has already ordered an independent review of the raw data collected by the cameras, and the city auditor recently requested a 30-day extension to finish it. A motion to delay Wednesday’s vote until that review was complete failed as well, according to 13abc.

The cameras will remain active while the auditor’s review continues, and council could take up the issue again with another vote at an upcoming meeting.
