Toledo’s bus system is getting a new name — and its first-ever rapid transit line.

The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority plans to rebrand its bus service as “TARTA Metro” starting early next year, making room for a new rapid-transit service the agency is now implementing, The Blade reported Oct. 29.

This is no cosmetic refresh. TARTA has been in the middle of a transformation since Lucas County voters switched its funding from a property tax to a sales tax back in 2021 — and the numbers are moving: ridership has topped 200,000 fixed-route rides in multiple months of 2025, 12 electric buses are on the way in, and a Bus Rapid Transit corridor study has already picked a locally preferred route with dedicated lanes and stations in the works. (See TARTA’s BRT page and the agency’s system-redesign overview.)

For the thousands of riders who depend on the system to get to work every day, the changes should mean new routes, higher frequencies, and a genuinely faster ride on the rapid corridor.

TARTA already gave riders a taste of goodwill with free rides on Election Day — but this rebrand is the agency planting a flag: Toledo’s transit future is bigger, faster, and louder.
