It’s over. After 23 years, 234 caps and a record 146 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo has handed back Portugal’s No. 7 shirt.

The 41-year-old announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in a video message on social media — and his farewell said it all.

“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the No. 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said.

“Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision because some decisions are not made with the mind alone. They are also made with the heart. A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end.”

Let that sink in. A journey that began in August 2003 — before some of today’s Portugal stars were even born — has come to an end.

The numbers are untouchable

Ronaldo leaves international football as the most prolific men’s international player ever: 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal, both men’s international records.

He played in a record six World Cups and became the first man to score in six World Cups. He scored for Portugal in 23 consecutive calendar years, from 2004 to 2026.

And he didn’t just pile up numbers — he delivered trophies. Ronaldo captained Portugal to Euro 2016 and lifted the Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025.

His final appearance in a Portugal shirt came on September 24, 2026, a 1-0 Nations League win over Wales.

The fallout with Jorge Jesus

The ending wasn’t the fairy tale anyone imagined. Ronaldo walked out of the national team camp on September 30 after falling out with head coach Jorge Jesus, who had benched him for the September 27 Nations League game against Norway. Ronaldo was then fined 255 euros and given a 30-day suspension.

Jesus said Thursday that the retirement was Ronaldo’s decision.

The Portuguese Football Federation, meanwhile, called Ronaldo its “eternal captain” and said it will organize a tribute event for him.

He’s NOT done with football

Don’t get it twisted — this is international retirement only. Ronaldo still plays club football for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, sits on 985 career goals and is chasing 1,000. He has said this is probably his last year of football.

And in a sign of just how much an era is ending, rival Lionel Messi also retired from international football with Argentina last month.

One era ends. The No. 7 shirt passes on. But 234 caps, 146 goals and a lifetime of moments? Nobody is touching that.
