The director behind one of the greatest crime movies ever made had a frightening Saturday: Michael Mann, 83, accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range and was taken to the hospital.

According to reports, Mann was attempting to holster his firearm at The Range LA — a members-only shooting club on the Westside — around 4 p.m. Saturday when the gun discharged, striking his leg. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the incident, describing it as a training accident, and Mann was transported by ambulance in stable condition.

His representatives moved quickly to reassure fans. “On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” the statement read. “He was treated and is being released.” Sources say the director, who has practiced target shooting for decades, is expected to make a full recovery.

For cinephiles, the real relief is what this means for Heat 2. Mann is in production on the long-awaited sequel to his 1995 masterpiece — the Pacino/De Niro classic — with Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale set to star, and sources confirm the injury will have no impact on the production schedule.

From Thief to Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Collateral and 2023’s Ferrari, Mann has spent six decades making crime look cool. Saturday, the crime genre came back to bite him — literally. Get well soon, maestro.
