TOLEDO, Ohio — Ohio Democrats just posted their biggest election wins in two decades, and the U.S. House map is the proof.

Democratic newcomer Don Leonard defeated U.S. Rep. Mike Carey in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District, while Republican Rep. Max Miller conceded the 7th District to Democratic challenger Brian Poindexter, who took 55% of the vote. Ohio Democrats will now hold 8 of the state’s 15 seats in the U.S. House, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The House flips cap a sweeping night. Amy Acton defeated Trump-backed Republican Vivek Ramaswamy to become the first woman ever elected Ohio governor — and the first Democrat to win the office in 20 years. Sherrod Brown won back his U.S. Senate seat two years after losing it. Ohioans also overwhelmingly passed Issue 3, locking voter ID requirements into the state constitution.

Down-ballot races stayed tight: Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose leads Democrat Annette Blackwell 51% to 49%; Democrat Seth Walsh leads Republican Jay Edwards 50.55% in the auditor race; and incumbent Justice Dan Hawkins leads Marilyn Zayas 51% to 49% in a Supreme Court contest.

All of Ohio’s statewide executive offices were open this year because of term limits — nearly every major race was a genuine toss-up, and most of them broke blue.

It was a historic night beyond the state too — read our breakdown of how Lucas County’s own election-night results delay played out locally.
