300 Toledo Kids Got New Winter Coats This Week — Here’s Who Made It Happen
On Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., partners came together at Escuela SMART Academy in south Toledo for a day of giving and celebration — and 300 local children went home with new winter coats.
The children also received winter essentials and took part in fun activities, turning an ordinary school day into a celebration. For the families at Escuela SMART Academy, a Toledo Public Schools building, the morning was about more than a coat. It was about neighbors showing up, ready to help, before the coldest months arrive.
The day was made possible by a long list of partners: Susie’s Coats for Kids, Hannah’s Socks, Designetics, Care for Kids, the Historic South Initiative, the Toledo Zoo, the Knights of Columbus, Metroparks Toledo and Salinas Exteriors. Together, they provided coats, socks and other winter essentials, along with activities and encouragement for the students.
Principal Natasha Allen has previously said roughly 180 of the school’s approximately 285 students need coats each year — a reminder of just how great the need is in this one school community. The coat distribution is an annual tradition of giving at Escuela SMART Academy, and each year it brings the school and its partners back together for the same purpose: making sure children are warm.
The partnership behind the effort has deep roots in Toledo. Susie’s Coats for Kids and Designetics have worked together to collect warm clothes for Toledo Public Schools students, as the Toledo Free Press has reported, helping to keep the focus on children who might otherwise go without.
As temperatures drop and winter approaches, a coat is more than a piece of clothing. For many families, it is a pocketbook issue — one more cost in a season already full of them, from heating bills to holiday expenses. A new coat, given freely and with care, can ease that pressure and help a child head to school warm, comfortable and ready to learn.
On Wednesday, that is exactly what happened at Escuela SMART Academy. Toledo nonprofits, businesses and community groups showed up for kids — not with fanfare, but with coats, socks, essentials and time. And 300 children left a little warmer, a little happier, and knowing their community is looking out for them.
