MACtion Massacre: Rockets Stomp NIU 42-3 as Glass Bowl Defense Dominates Again
TOLEDO, Ohio — The opening kickoff told you everything. Trayvon Rudolph took it 96 yards to the house, and the Toledo Rockets never looked back, steamrolling Northern Illinois 42-3 in a Wednesday night MACtion rout at the Glass Bowl.
Toledo (5-4, 3-2 MAC) scored early and often. Quarterback Tucker Gleason punched in a two-yard touchdown run to make it 14-3 early in the second quarter, Chip Trayanum added a five-yard scoring run, and the Rockets took a 28-3 lead into halftime. Kenji Christian scored twice in the second half to finish the rout, per NIU Athletics.
The numbers were a beatdown in every phase: Toledo piled up 443 yards of total offense and converted 9 of 14 third downs, while holding NIU to just 203 yards and 2-of-16 on third down. Gleason threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns, snapping NIU’s 34-game streak of holding opponents under 300 yards passing.
It was the latest statement from a defense that entered the night ranked third nationally in total defense, fourth in passing defense and 10th in scoring defense. NIU head coach Thomas Hammock didn’t sugarcoat it: “Credit to Toledo for going out and dominating the football game. We did not match Toledo’s physicality.”
The Huskies’ only points came on a 50-yard Andrew Glass field goal in the first quarter. NIU fell to 2-7.
Up next for Toledo: the men’s basketball team visits No. 6 Michigan State on Thursday night at 8 p.m. on national TV — a huge early-season test for the Rockets.
