Godzilla Minus Zero Is About to Triple the First Film’s Opening Weekend
Godzilla is about to stomp all over the box office — and this time he’s bringing King Ghidorah with him.
Godzilla Minus Zero opens wide Friday, Nov. 6, distributed in the US by GKIDS, and it’s tracking a $25 million to $35 million domestic opening weekend across roughly 3,254 theaters, according to Box Office Pro. That would nearly triple Godzilla Minus One‘s $11.4 million domestic opening — the first film went on to $57.1 million in North America.
The sequel holds a 90% Rotten Tomatoes critical score after raves out of the New York Film Festival, and it already bowed in Tokyo on Nov. 3 to celebrate Godzilla’s 72nd anniversary. Set in 1949, two years after Minus One, the film follows Godzilla as he regenerates and resurfaces to fight a new monster, King Ghidorah, with director Takashi Yamazaki returning, SuperHeroHype reports.
IMAX screenings are a key driver — and if it hits the top end of tracking, it would likely become GKIDS’ top grosser ever, passing The Boy and the Heron at $47.3 million.
Weekend competition includes Bill Hader’s Cat in the Hat (tracking $15–20 million) and Angel Studios’ Drummer Boy ($10–15 million). But the king looks ready to take the weekend.
