A Wood County judge has sentenced the Napoleon man who fled the scene of a deadly crash on Interstate 75 to 25 to 29 years in prison.

Wood County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Dobson announced Saturday, Nov. 7, that Nicholas Luderman, 24, of Napoleon, was sentenced by Wood County Common Pleas Judge Joel Kuhlman for the April 3 crash on I-75 in Henry Township near Cygnet that killed two people and sent several others to hospitals.

Luderman was driving southbound when his car struck another southbound vehicle. That vehicle crossed the median and struck a northbound vehicle. The driver of one vehicle and a passenger in the other died; several others were hurt, some seriously.

After the crash, Luderman fled the scene, struck a parked car in Cygnet, and was caught by North Baltimore Police.

Luderman pleaded guilty in August to two counts of second-degree felony aggravated vehicular homicide, four counts of third-degree felony aggravated vehicular assault, and tampering with evidence. One failure-to-stop count was dismissed.

Kuhlman imposed a sentence of 25 to 29 years — 21 of the 25 years are mandatory, and the sentence can extend to 29 years based on Luderman’s conduct in prison. He faced up to 40 years.

Family members of both people killed and most of those injured spoke at the sentencing.
