Sometimes the help a family needs most arrives right on time.

The family of McKenna Schack-Wise, 5, and Melaina Schack-Bishop, 11, received a $1,300 Helping Hand check from 13abc and Yark Automotive Group to help with bills and other costs from the crash that injured both girls.

The sisters were hit in a school crosswalk on Bancroft Street in September during afternoon pickup. Their mother recalled the terrifying moment: “I’m just sitting in the car waiting and somebody comes screaming, ‘Your kids were hit, your kids were hit…'”

McKenna suffered a brain bleed, a fractured skull and a fractured leg. Melaina had fewer injuries — and her little sister credits her with saving her life. “McKenna, she’s five, so she just said, ‘My sister saved me,'” their mother Schak said.

The driver has been charged, and both girls have gone back to school. But the family is still adjusting — juggling doctor visits, therapy and lost time at work. “I’m just very appreciative,” Schak said of the Helping Hand check.
