For many older Toledoans, the knock on the door is about much more than lunch.

It is a friendly face. A check-in. Sometimes, as longtime volunteer Maggie Mahon puts it, the only human contact a senior will have all day.

“Oftentimes we’re the only contact that they have throughout the day,” said Mahon, who has been delivering meals for 15 years.

That simple visit is about to matter to far more people. Mobile Meals of Toledo, in an Oct. 20 report by WTOL 11, is preparing for a major expansion in 2027 — and it needs Toledo’s help to make it happen.

The nonprofit expects to jump from about 260,000 meals in 2026 to between 600,000 and 800,000 meals in 2027. The number of seniors it serves is expected to roughly triple as well, from 2,000 to 3,000 today to about 6,000 next year.

The growth is being driven by a rising senior population, along with plans to expand to 12 more senior centers in 2027, according to CEO Alison Foreman.

Demand is already surging. The organization recently served about 500 meals in a single day — a level comparable to the height of the pandemic. Demand fell after the pandemic, but it is rising again, and Mobile Meals is preparing for it to keep climbing.

Looking further ahead, Foreman said Mobile Meals could serve more than 1 million meals a year by 2030.

To get there, the nonprofit is adding vehicles and infrastructure and fundraising to cover a federal funding shortfall. But bricks, wheels and funding alone will not deliver a single extra meal.

People will.

Mobile Meals currently has about 300 volunteers — and it needs as many as 500. That means about 200 more Toledoans are needed to step forward, drive a route, and be that knock on the door for a senior who may otherwise spend the day alone.

It does not take a big time commitment to make a big difference. A single route can brighten a whole list of days — and for the seniors waiting on the other side of the door, that visit can mean reassurance, connection and a hot meal they can count on.

As the need grows, so does the opportunity to answer it. Toledo has always shown up for its neighbors. In 2027, Mobile Meals will need that spirit more than ever.
