TOLEDO, Ohio — The University of Toledo has barred Bowling Green State University’s 425-member Falcon Marching Band from performing at halftime of the Battle of I-75 rivalry game, setting off a firestorm of protest across Falcon Nation.

UToledo informed BGSU around Oct. 14 that its marching band could not take the field during halftime of the Friday, Nov. 20 matchup at the Glass Bowl, according to reporting by BG Falcon Media, the university’s student news outlet. The storied Battle of I-75 between the Rockets and Falcons is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff and will air nationally on ESPN2, with the kickoff time confirmed as part of the Mid-American Conference’s kickoff-times announcement, per BGSU Athletics.

BGSU President Rodney Rogers told band students in an email that he was “extremely disappointed” by the decision. Falcon Marching Band drum major Madison Allman summed up the band’s reaction: “Gutted is the word I would use.”

Student leaders followed up by emailing UToledo’s administration directly, pleading for the chance to perform at one of the Mid-American Conference’s most heated rivalry games. The 425-member band has performed at the rivalry matchup for years, making the shutout sting all the more.

The University of Toledo responded with a statement on Oct. 29, saying halftime at the Glass Bowl is reserved for the university’s annual Hall of Fame class inductions, along with a performance by the Rocket Marching Band. The decision, the statement said, was “clearly communicated and not a surprise.” The university added that the Falcon Marching Band is still invited to attend the game.

That explanation did little to calm the backlash. A UToledo Instagram post about the game drew more than 400 comments, many of them demanding that the university “let the FMB play.” Band alumni, current students and fans flooded social media with tributes to the Falcon Marching Band and calls for UToledo to reverse course.

Some early reports referred to an “October 26th home game,” which appears to be a typo — the Battle of I-75 is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20 at the Glass Bowl.

The Battle of I-75 remains one of college football’s most intense regional rivalries, pitting the Rockets and Falcons just 20 miles apart along Interstate 75. The game is a centerpiece of UToledo’s 2026 home-season promotional slate, per UToledo Athletics.

Whether the Falcons’ band will get a last-minute reprieve remains unclear. For now, 425 musicians who have been rehearsing for the biggest stage of their season are left without one — and Falcon Nation is not taking it quietly.
