The Black Parade Billboard Number 1 moment finally arrived — twenty years after My Chemical Romance released the album that defined a generation. The emo anthem of a lifetime is now, officially, a chart-topper.

After two decades of sing-alongs, eyeliner and very loud feelings, The Black Parade has scored its first-ever Billboard 200 No. 1, jumping from No. 139 to No. 1 on the chart dated Nov. 7. The 20th-anniversary reissue powered the surge, with 78,000 equivalent album units — including 68,000 in pure sales.

It is the longest wait ever for an album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Twenty years. No other album has taken this long to climb to the top.

For anyone who lived through 2006, the near-miss still stings a little: the album originally peaked at No. 2, behind the Hannah Montana soundtrack. This time, nothing stood in its way.

And the parade is not stopping there. Fresh today, Nov. 7, the album also topped three more Billboard charts — Top Rock Albums, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, and Top Alternative Albums — as Men’s Journal reports. To be clear on the timeline: the Billboard 200 No. 1 itself was reported Nov. 1–2, on the chart dated Nov. 7. Today’s fresh news is those three additional chart-tops.

This is a payoff 20 years in the making — for the kids who wore the black parade uniform to school, for the fans who never stopped screaming every word of “Welcome to the Black Parade,” and for a band whose darkest, grandest album just became its biggest chart triumph. Some records take a week to hit No. 1. This one took a generation. It was worth the wait.
